Alterações histológicas em placas ósseas do peixe cascudo Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel) (Teleostei, Loricariidae) e sua freqüência no lago Guaíba, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil Zoologia
Flores-Lopes,Fábio; Malabarba,Luiz R.; Pereira,Edson H.L.; Silva,José F. Pezzi da.
Little information is available about natural populations of fishes exposed to polluted waters in Brazil. Contaminants may be lethal or predispose fishes to sickness, being the analysis of aquatic organisms a good indicator of environmental quality. The violinha, Rineloricaria strigilata (Hensel, 1868), is a common loricariid catfish in the Guaíba lake basin, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and has been selected as a bioindicator for being resident, occurring in more than 50% of the samples, and by showing externally detectable neoplasies. These are characterized by its dark pigmentation, bony plates hypertrophy, and hypertrophy and irregular arrangement of the odontodes. Histology showed hypertrophied epitelial tissues, with an increased number of secretory...

Analysis of EGFR and HER-2 expressions in ductal carcinomas in situ in canine mammary glands Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Silva,I.L.D.; Dias,A.P.M.; Bertagnolli,A.C.; Cassali,G.D.; Ferreira,E..
Biomolecular evidence has shown that ductal carcinoma in situ(DCIS) may develop into invasive carcinoma of the canine mammary gland, and mutations in proto-oncogenes HER2 and EGFR; two members of the family of epidermal growth factor receptors, may be involved in this process. The purpose of this study was the characterization of the immunohistochemical expression of the EGFR and HER2 proteins in the process of neoplastic transformation, supposedly present in ductal carcinomas in situin canine mammary glands. Fifteen cases of DCIS were evaluated, with a higher expression of HER2 and EGFR being observed in low-grade carcinomas when compared with high-grade neoplasms, and with a high positive statistical correlation in the latter. Results suggest that...

Argenta,Fernando Froner; Pereira,Paula Reis; Bertolini,Marianna; Fratini,Letícia Mendes; Saccaro,Renata de Oliveira; Sonne,Luciana; Driemeier,David; Pavarini,Saulo Petinatti.
ABSTRACT: A carcinoid is a rare neoplasm derived from neuroendocrine cells that may arise in the hepatobiliary system. This report described two cases of carcinoid of the gallbladder in dogs, with emphasis on the clinical, pathological and immunohistochemical aspects. Case 1 was a 10-year-old female Shih Tzu, with a history of prostration and occasional episodes of diarrhea and vomiting. Case 2 was a 10-year-old male Cocker Spaniel, with a history of diarrhea and abdominal pain. Abdominal ultrasonography suggested a neoplasm of the gallbladder in both cases. The dogs underwent cholecystectomy, and 10% formalin-fixed samples were sent for pathological examination. Histologically, a neoplastic proliferation of neuroendocrine cells was observed in the...

Detection of mutations within exons 4 to 8 of the p53 tumor suppressor gene in canine mammary glands Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,D.M.B.; Barros,M.G.O.; Silva,J.S.C.; Silva,M.B.; Coleto,Z.F.; Jimenez,G.C.; Adrião,M.; Wischral,A..
Fifteen female canines with mammary tumors and 6 normal females were used to study mutations in exons 4 to 8 of the p53 gene. DNA samples from the tumors, respective adjacent normal mammary tissue and mammary glands from healthy animals were sequenced and analyzed for the presence of mutations. Mutations were found in 71.8% of the samples and the most frequent were missense mutations. The most attacked exons in the mammary tumor were 5, 7 and 8, with 23.4, 31.6 and 23.4% mutations, respectively. Canine mammary tumors are related to mutations in gene p53 and mutations mostly occur in the region of the protein that is linked to the DNA in the cell nucleus, which can change the functionality of the cell and propitiate tumor growth. Despite being...

Cassali,G.D.; Salvador,A.; Freitas,C.; Dutra,A.P.; Schmitt,F.C..
Flow cytometric analysis of DNA content was performed on 28 samples of canine mammary tumors. Nine of them were benign and 19 were malignant. All benign tumors and 11 malignant tumors (57.9%) were diploid (P<0.05). Form the aneuploid tumors, five (26.3%) were hyperdiploid, one (5.3%) hypodiploid, one (5.3%) near triploid and one (5.3%) multiploid. The analysis of the expression of the markers PR and CD31 revealed a significant difference between diploid and aneuploid tumors (P<0.05). The immunoreactivity of PR was higher in diploid tumors, while the immunoreactivity of CD31 was stronger in aneuploid tumors. No difference between the markers MIB-1, c-erbB2, p53 and Cyclin D1 was observed (P>0.05). Using the flow cytometry analysis and...

Dong,Wenzhu; Chen,Hangping; Wang,Lu; Cao,Xiaoqian; Bu,Xiawei; Peng,Yan; Dong,Aiqing; Ying,Mengjiang; Chen,Xu; Zhang,Xin; Yao,Li.
Given their relationship with metabolic syndrome and systematic inflammatory diseases, the pathogenesis of hypertension, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia is closely related. To explore the common genes among these three conditions, spontaneous hypertensive rats (SHR), spontaneous diabetic Goto-Kakizaki rats (GK) and hyperlipidemia rats (HMR) were reared for experiments. Gene array was used to identify the genes of SHR, GK and HMR compared with normal Wistar rats using TBtools software. First, real-time PCR was applied to verify these genes, and Cytoscape software was used to construct networks based on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database. Second, Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database analysis was performed...

Campos,C.B.; Gamba,C.O.; Damasceno,K.A.; Lavalle,G.E.; Cassali,G.D..
ABSTRACT The aim of this report is to describe the first histopathological, immunohistochemical, and clinical characteristics of a feline glycogen-rich clear cell carcinoma (GRCCC). A Persian queen was admitted with mammary gland tumors and underwent radical unilateral mastectomy. Overall survival was considered 33 days and death was due to clinical evolution of the disease. Microscopic evaluation demonstrated epithelial cells arranged in a predominantly solid pattern, tumor cells presented an ample, granular, and foamy clear cytoplasm, and moderate cellular pleomorfism. The presence of cytoplasmatic glycogen was confirmed through diastase digestion followed by PAS staining. Histopathological and histochemical findings lead to the diagnosis of GRCCC with...

Conceição,L.G.; Camargo,L.P.; Costa,P.R.S.; Kuwabara,D.A.; Fonterrada,C.O..

Subcutaneous administration of ketoprofen delays Ehrlich solid tumor growth in mice Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,C.M.; Auler,P.A.; Reis,D.C.; Lavalle,G.E.; Ferreira,E.; Cassali,G.D..
Ketoprofen, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) has proven to exert anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and anti-angiogenic activities in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic conditions. We investigated the effects of this compound on tumor development in Swiss mice previously inoculated with Ehrlich tumor cells. To carry out this study the solid tumor was obtained from cells of the ascites fluid of Ehrlich tumor re-suspended in physiological saline to give 2.5x106cells in 0.05mL. After tumor inoculation, the animals were separated into two groups (n = 10). The animals treated with ketoprofen 0.1µg/100µL/animal were injected intraperitoneally at intervals of 24h for 10 consecutive days. Animals from the control group received saline. At the end...

The Complex Link between Apoptosis and Autophagy: a Promising New Role for RB Anais da ABC (AABC)
DELOU,JOÃO M.A.; BIASOLI,DEBORAH; BORGES,HELENA L..
ABSTRACT Physiological processes, as autophagy, proliferation and apoptosis are affected during carcinogenesis. Restoring cellular sensitivity to apoptotic stimuli, such as the antineoplastic cocktails, has been explored as a strategy to eliminate cancer cells. Autophagy, a physiological process of recycling organelles and macromolecules can be deviated from homeostasis to support cancer cells survival, proliferation, escape from apoptosis, and therapy resistance. The relationship between autophagy and apoptosis is complex and many stimuli can induce both processes. Most chemotherapeutic agents induce autophagy and it is not clear whether and how this chemotherapy-induced autophagy might contribute to resistance to apoptosis. Here, we review current...
